PYA Umpire Training, Pay & Path to Power

How STLWEST training, PYA pay, and Pack the Park work together

STLWEST Training Requirements

All umpires working games at PYA must meet STLWEST training requirements, which are coordinated league-wide and communicated directly by the STLWEST UIC through official emails and registration forms.

  • All umpires must complete STLWEST informational/video training and the open-book rules test.
  • Umpires with 3 or fewer years of experience are required to attend additional rules and on-field sessions.
  • STLWEST training must be completed before game assignments are issued.

STLWEST Training Communication

STLWEST training requirements, performance expectations, and evaluation standards are communicated directly by the STLWEST UIC through official emails and registration materials.

These communications outline required training sessions, rules testing expectations, and performance readiness based on years of experience.

It is the umpire’s responsibility to review and complete all STLWEST-required training as communicated.

Pack the Park – Path to Power Training

The Pack the Park Tournament is used by PYA as a training, onboarding, and evaluation opportunity for umpires.

This training opportunity allows umpires to:

  • Gain live-game training in a supported environment
  • Become familiar with PYA fields, operations, and expectations
  • Complete local onboarding prior to paid assignments

Compensation for Pack the Park training is provided in the form of required umpire equipment, including:

  • Official PYA umpire shirt
  • Umpire hat
  • Clicker
  • Plate brush

Participation details:

  • Open to any umpire interested in working games at PYA
  • Required for PYA home umpires as part of local onboarding
  • Must be completed before being scheduled for paid PYA games

PYA Umpire Pay Scale

Umpire pay at PYA is issued on a per-game basis and is based on experience, training completion, evaluations, reliability, and professionalism.

  • 1st Year: $30 per game
  • 2nd Year: $35 per game
  • 3rd Year: $40–$50 per game
  • 4th Year+: $50–$60 per game

Placement within pay ranges is determined by PYA.

Protective Gear

Protective gear is available at PYA fields for umpire use and will be maintained and replaced by PYA as needed.

Umpires may also choose to use their own personal protective gear if preferred.

Primary Park, Other Parks & Pay

On the STLWEST umpire form, you will indicate your primary (home) park and whether you are willing to umpire at other STLWEST organizations.

  • Umpires work as independent contractors (1099).
  • If you umpire at another organization, they will honor your experience level but compensation will follow that park’s pay scale and maximum rates.
  • PYA sets pay rates only for games worked at PYA.
