Umpire in Chief (UIC)
Role Definition
PYA Umpire-in-Chief (UIC)
The Umpire-in-Chief (UIC) oversees officiating standards and support for PYA games. This role focuses on
training, consistency, evaluation, and professionalism
so games are officiated fairly, safely, and in alignment with league rules.

Purpose of the Role
The UIC ensures consistent, high-quality officiating across all PYA games. The goal is to support umpires through clear standards, training, and feedback while maintaining fairness, safety, and respect for the game.
Primary Responsibilities
1) Umpire Standards & Rule Interpretation
Establishes and communicates officiating standards for PYA games
Ensures rule interpretations align with league and age-division rules
Provides clarification to umpires when questions arise
2) Training & Development
Supports training, mentoring, and onboarding of umpires
Coordinates clinics, shadowing, or evaluation opportunities
Promotes continuous improvement and learning
3) Evaluation & Feedback
Observes or reviews umpire performance when needed
Provides constructive, respectful feedback
Identifies development needs or concerns for escalation
4) Game-Day Support & Issue Resolution
Acts as a point of escalation for officiating issues during games
Supports calm, professional resolution of disputes
Coordinates with Tournament Director or board when needed
5) Professional Conduct & Culture
Promotes professionalism, respect, and sportsmanship
Supports umpires in managing difficult situations
Addresses conduct concerns through appropriate channels
6) Coordination with Assigning & Leadership
Works with the Umpire Coordinator/Assignor on coverage needs
Provides input on readiness and advancement opportunities
Supports consistency across leagues and events
Role Boundaries
The UIC does not set league policy, determine pay rates, or impose discipline unilaterally. Scheduling and assignments belong to the Assignor; disciplinary actions follow board-approved processes. This role supports standards, training, and escalation to ensure fair, consistent officiating.
