Board Role Definition
PYA President
The President is the chief volunteer leader of Pacific Youth Association (PYA). This role focuses on
direction, oversight, coordination, and communication
—not doing every task personally. Clear role definitions protect volunteers, reduce confusion, and keep programs running smoothly.

Purpose of the Role
The President ensures PYA stays mission-focused, organized, and accountable. This role leads the Board, supports volunteers, and represents the organization when needed. The President’s job is to
coordinate and empower
others—so no single person carries the entire association.
Primary Responsibilities
1) Organizational Leadership & Oversight
Provides strategic direction aligned with PYA’s mission and bylaws
Ensures ethical, transparent operations and strong volunteer culture
Oversees programs at a high level (does not run daily tasks for each sport)
2) Board Leadership
Presides over board meetings and helps set agendas with officers
Facilitates productive discussion, respectful communication, and votes
Ensures action items are assigned and followed through
3) Delegation & Accountability
Appoints/confirm committee chairs and program leads as defined by board policy
Ensures responsibilities are distributed fairly and not concentrated
Supports volunteers while maintaining clear boundaries and authority lines
4) Communication & Representation
Serves as spokesperson when needed and represents PYA externally
Builds relationships with leagues, city partners, vendors, and stakeholders
Escalates issues that impact safety, policy, or organizational risk
5) Policy & Governance
Ensures bylaws and policies are followed consistently
Works with the board to update procedures when needed
Addresses conflicts/grievances through established processes
6) Support, Not Micromanagement
Supports commissioners and coordinators without taking over their duties
Helps remove roadblocks and ensures teams have what they need
Promotes a culture of respect, fairness, and follow-through
